Despite a speed up of electrification which is bad news for thermoelectric based waste heat recovery in internal combustion engines, not all has been bad for this energy harvesting technology.

Using flexible conducting polymers and novel circuitry patterns printed on paper, researchers have demonstrated proof-of-concept wearable thermoelectric generators that can harvest energy from body heat to power simple biosensors for measuring heart rate, respiration or other factors.

Researchers have built a flexible sensor that can be rolled up and swallowed. Upon ingestion, the sensor adheres to the stomach wall or intestinal lining, where it can measure the rhythmic contractions of the digestive tract.

Using a simple layer-by-layer coating technique, researchers have developed a paper-based flexible supercapacitor that could be used to help power wearable devices.

Chemists have designed a new catalyst that speeds up the rate of a key step in "artificial photosynthesis" -- an effort to mimic how plants, algae, and some bacteria harness sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into energy-rich fuels.

The conference saw attendees and presentations from automotive OEMs through to small innovative start-ups and research groups. Keynote speakers included Toyota, Sono Motors, Hanergy Europe and Project Loon.

IDTechEx is hosting a free webinar on Tuesday 17th October 2017 titled Lithium-ion Batteries - from Raw Materials, to Gigafactories, and beyond.

A touch of asphalt may be the secret to high-capacity lithium metal batteries that charge 10 to 20 times faster than commercial lithium-ion batteries, according to scientists.
